Low EC Coco Chips Block

Low EC (electrical conductivity) coconut husk chips are a type of horticultural substrate made from the fibrous material found between the hard outer shell and the flesh of a coconut. It is a renewable and organic resource that is commonly used as a growing medium for plants.

The coconut husk chips are soaked in water to remove excess salts and other impurities that could be harmful to plants. This process helps to reduce the electrical conductivity (EC) of the substrate, making it more suitable for plant growth. Low EC coconut husk chips have a lower salt content than regular coconut husk chips, which can be beneficial for plants that are sensitive to high levels of salt.

The low EC coconut husk chips are then compressed into block shapes for ease of handling and transportation. The blocks are typically wrapped in plastic or other materials to prevent them from drying out and to protect them from damage during transport.

To use the low EC coconut husk chips blocks, they are soaked in water to rehydrate them and allow them to expand. The expanded blocks provide a loose, aerated medium that is ideal for plant growth. The low EC coconut husk chips blocks have excellent water retention and drainage properties, allowing plants to receive the right amount of moisture and air.

Low EC Coco Chips Block FAQ

What does low EC mean in coco peat?

About the figure “EC” of the growing media coco peat Low EC coco peat means the product's salt level is low. On the other hand, high EC coir pith indicates the amount of salt is substantial. Since most plants can only grow using coir pith with low EC, it is important that you choose the one that has an overall EC level of less than 0,8.

What are coco chips for aeration?

Good drainage and aeration: The porous nature of coco chips allows for good drainage and aeration, which is important for the healthy growth of roots. Retention of moisture: Coco chips are able to hold onto moisture well, which can be beneficial in areas with low rainfall or during periods of drought.

What are the disadvantages of coco coir?

Absorption and over-watering Coco Coir

Coco substrates are not particularly porous so can be difficult for a solution to break the substrates’ surface tension from hand watering. As a result, many growers soak their coco with far too much solution with the anticipation of it being slowly saturated into the substrates.
